After relocating to China, 12-year-old Dre Parker is completely lost. After he makes friends with Mei Ying, a classmate, Cheng, a rival, begins to harass and assault Dre. Before long, Dre's apartment's maintenance worker, Mr. Han, stops Cheng and his buddies from hitting him and offers Dre a spot in the Kung Fu tournament in exchange for the bullies firing Dre. When Mr. Han is exposed as a Kung Fu master, Dre quickly discovers that Kung Fu is about self-defense and peace rather than violence and bloodshed, and that he is much more than just a maintenance worker.
Facts
According to producer Will Smith, Jackie Chan was so well-liked in China that he was able to use his position to assist with many parts of the movie, including obtaining authorization to film in specific areas.
Fools
The title "The Karate Kid" alludes to the bullies referring to him as the "Karate Kid" when he adopts a posture at the start of the battle, even though the movie's plot centers on kung fu rather than karate.
