April O'Neil was a talented computer programmer and the helper of renowned but evil scientist Baxter Stockman in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles plotline from Mirage Comics. She assisted in programming his MOUSER robots, but she left his workshop when she learned that Baxter was using them to delve into bank vaults. She was pursued by robots into the sewer, where three of the Turtles quickly rescued her. Later, an MOUSER invasion was successfully repelled by the Turtles.
