Class Dojo | Dojo History

Buddhism is where the term "dōjō" first appeared. At first, dōjō served as temple adjuncts and official training grounds for any Japanese art that ended in "-dō," derived from the Chinese word Dao, which means "way" or "path." Dōjō are occasionally used to refer to meditation rooms where Zen Buddhists engage in zazen meditation. The more specific and popular alternative word is zen-do. Like its founding teacher, Taisen Deshimaru, European Sōtō Zen organizations associated with the International Zen Association prefer to refer to their meditation rooms as dōjō rather than zendo.

Class Dojo | Japanese Martial Arts Dojo

A good Japanese martial arts dōjō is regarded as unique and is well-maintained by its practitioners. As part of the Japanese tradition to maintain a clean and dignified environment, shoes are not allowed in a class dojo. It is customary in several forms to do a ceremonial cleaning (sōji; 掃虤) of the dōjō at the start and/or finish of every training session.

Class Dojo | Dojo Architecture

With shomen and several entrances utilized according to student and instructor rank, many traditional dōjō adhere to a set pattern. The Shomen is a wall that faces the entrance and is often located to the north of the Dojo. According to the shomen, pupils usually enter at the lower-left corner of the dōjō, while instructors enter in the upper-right corner. Usually, shomen has a shelf attached. Traditionally, a miniature Shintō shrine with a sculpture, flower arrangement, or other items would be displayed on the shelf. Typically, images of previous Masters are located next to the shrine rather than on it. The word "place of honor" is kamiza, while the shrine itself is referred to by the related phrase "kamidana."
